To understand why our body needs Antioxidants, we need to know what Free Radicals are.
Free Radicals are atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons. Once Free Radicals are formed they can start a chain reaction. The electrons being unpaired search for a partner, stealing electrons from other atoms, therefore creating new Free Radicals. Free Radicals can cause damage to cellular components such as DNA and the Cell Membrane. This damage can cause cells to function improperly or die.
Free Radicals are by-products of ongoing biochemical reactions in the body.
- Tobacco Smoke
- Air Pollutants
- Fried Food
- AND MORE
To fight Free Radicals, the body uses Antioxidants.
Antioxidants are molecules that can terminate and neutralize Free Radicals. The Antioxidant donates an electron to the Free Radical, neutralizing it before it can oxidize other cell components. Once the Free Radical is paired, it is stable and is no longer dangerous.
There are many different substances that can act as an Antioxidant. The most familiar ones are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, and Beta-Carotene. These are found in the food that we eat. Vegetables and fruits are a rich source of Antioxidants.
- Berries; Blueberries, Cranberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, & Blackberries
- Pears & Apples With the Peel
- Citrus Fruits, such as: Oranges, Pineapple, Lemon
- Stone Fruits, such as: Peaches, Nectarines, Apricots, Cherries, & Plums
- Bell Peppers
- Sweet Potatoes, Red & Russet Potatoes with Skin
- Nuts; Walnuts, Pistachios, Pecans, Hazelnuts, & Almonds
By having a diet rich in Antioxidants we are helping our body combat Free Radicals and decrease our risks for disease and illness.
