Ingredient Spotlight | Pomegranate

This week’s ingredient spotlight is the pomegranate, found in the 1ViZN Amazon PowrBlend. The pomegranate originated from the region of modern day Iran and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region and northern India. The pomegranate is similar in size to a grapefruit, rounded in shape with red thick skin. The pomegranate can have between 200 – 1,200 seeds or arils, unlike other fruits the seeds (arils) are the edible part of the pomegranate.

Pomegranates aren’t just a delicious fruit, they are also a rich source of antioxidants, specifically a group of antioxidants known as punicalagins. These antioxidants are powerful free radical hunters that can help reduce oxidative damage in the body.

Many studies from laboratory testing to human clinical studies have shown results of the benefits of punicalagins, especially in cardiovascular health. Here are some of the health benefits of pomegranates:

  • Helps Reduce Risk of Heart Disease
  • Helps Lower Blood Pressure
  • May Improve Blood Flow
  • Helps Body’s Digestive System
  • Supports the Immune System
  • Can Help Reduce Stress Levels
  • Helps Prevent Plaque Formation

While Pomegranates are a good source of antioxidants they are also high in vitamins and minerals including:

  • Fiber
  • Protein
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin K
  • Folate
  • Potassium
